The succession of leadership often follows a strict family bloodline, but historical shifts in power sometimes break this mold. The primary approach among commentators is that the transition of power during this period did not pass down through an established royal dynasty. Instead, leadership shifted to an entirely new lineage. Following the death of the previous ruler, Bela, the crown did not go to an heir within his family. The new king who rises to take his place is an outsider to the former royal house, a man named Jobab, the son of Zerah, who hails from the city of Bozrah.
