I Chronicles 1:4Sefaria

נֹ֥חַ שֵׁ֖ם חָ֥ם וָיָֽפֶת׃ {ס}

The history of the post-flood world begins with a simple record of a father and his three sons. This brief listing serves as a shorthand to establish that Noah fathered these three individuals, setting the stage for the repopulation of the earth [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Since the primary goal of the book is to quickly trace the lineage leading to Abraham and David, it might seem unnecessary to list all of Noah's sons instead of focusing immediately on Shem. However, this follows a consistent editing style. The text systematically introduces secondary family lines first, bringing their stories to a close before dedicating its full attention to the central, chosen lineage. This same method is used later when the descendants of Ishmael are listed before those of Isaac, and the descendants of Esau are detailed before those of Jacob [רש״י].

Beyond serving as a mere genealogical record, these three sons represent the essential root from which humanity branched out into seventy distinct nations, each with its own overseeing spiritual prince. Humanity as a whole is divided into three fundamental categories, which are compared to the different parts of a tree. The descendants of Shem are likened to the fruit, representing the spiritual individuals who walk in the ways of God. The descendants of Ham are compared to the outer shell, symbolizing those who are driven by physical desires and materialism, destined for servitude. Finally, the descendants of Japheth represent the leaves that protect the fruit. They symbolize the middle tier of humanity, focusing on the intellect, societal manners, and the practical leadership of the state [מלבי״ם].
