דברי הימים א, פרק א׳, פסוק כ״ד

I Chronicles 1:24Sefaria

שֵׁ֥ם ׀ אַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד שָֽׁלַח׃

After an extensive record of the world's various nations, the narrative shifts its focus entirely toward the direct family line leading to Abraham. A continuous, condensed genealogy begins, tracing a direct path from father to son until Abraham is born [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

These ancestors were already mentioned earlier in the historical record, raising the question of why their names are repeated now. One perspective explains that this repetition serves to honor Abraham. The narrative transitions from a broad overview of all humanity to a narrow focus on his specific ancestry. This process is compared to someone sifting through sand to discover a single, precious pearl [רש״י].

From another angle, this specific family tree maps the transmission of a unique spiritual quality throughout human history. The list identifies the individuals who carried this spiritual distinction from the time of Noah all the way to Abraham. Within this chain of generations, certain figures, such as Shem and Eber, possessed this spiritual greatness themselves. Others, however, acted merely as connecting links. Individuals like Terah did not embody this greatness personally, but they prepared the ground for this unique spiritual quality to emerge in the generations that followed [מלבי״ם].
