I Chronicles 1:17Sefaria

בְּנֵ֣י שֵׁ֔ם עֵילָ֣ם וְאַשּׁ֔וּר וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֖ד וְל֣וּד וַאֲרָ֑ם וְע֥וּץ וְח֖וּל וְגֶ֥תֶר וָמֶֽשֶׁךְ׃ {ס}

Tracing the roots of early humanity reveals how ancient families expanded into distinct nations. The lineage of Shem details the origins of several key global identities. Among these early founders, Arpachshad is recognized as the father of the Chaldeans, the people who later became known as the Babylonians [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Certain figures, namely Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech, are presented in this genealogy as if they were direct sons of Shem. However, commentators agree that these four were actually the sons of Aram, as originally recorded in the Book of Genesis. They are included directly alongside Shem's children for the sake of brevity, relying on the ancient principle that grandchildren are considered like one's own children [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, רד״ק]. This specific historical record focuses broadly on descendants who grew into separate, independent nations. Later on, the family tree is recounted again, but with a completely different purpose: to trace the direct, unbroken family line leading straight to Abraham [מלבי״ם].

A notable variation exists regarding the name Meshech, who is called Mash in the Genesis account. Some commentators explain that the two names are linguistically related, and the individual was simply known by both [רלב״ג, רד״ק]. A complementary perspective suggests that the earlier record in Genesis intentionally shortened his name to Mash to prevent confusion with a completely different person named Meshech, who was descended from Japheth [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
