I Samuel 11:6Sefaria

A sudden and dramatic shift takes place in the life of Saul, transforming him from a quiet, private farmer into an active and authoritative leader. Facing a severe threat and gross injustice against the nation, a direct divine intervention awakens his courage and compels him to take decisive action.

The primary approach among commentators is that a divine outpouring of bravery, courage, and leadership suddenly rested upon Saul. This experience represents the first level of prophecy and divine inspiration, granted to a person specifically to motivate them toward a noble action that saves the community from danger [אברבנאל]. Such an awakening was absolutely necessary. Up until this moment, Saul had not functioned as a king; he had simply returned to his agricultural work and received no royal treatment from the people. The divine spirit that now enveloped him granted him the essential characteristics of royalty and governance for the very first time [אלשיך].

Upon hearing the distressing news and feeling this new spirit, Saul is overcome with intense anger [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There is a profound psychological connection between a spirit of bravery and the experience of anger. When a weak person hears of an injustice, they typically sink into sadness and worry. However, a courageous person is filled with a fierce anger that drives them to demand justice and take action [מלבי״ם]. In this context, anger acts as a practical tool of bravery, pushing the individual to respond [אברבנאל]. Without this divine, royal spirit, Saul would have simply shared in the collective sadness of the people. Instead, the spirit transformed his reaction into the active, righteous rage of a king [אלשיך].

The specific sequence of these events carries deep significance. The divine spirit rested upon Saul first, and only afterward did his anger flare up. This order is crucial because a prophetic and divine spirit cannot rest upon someone who is already consumed by anger or sadness. Therefore, God first filled Saul with a spirit of holiness and courage. Only from within that pure spiritual awakening did the fierce anger erupt, ultimately moving him to lead and protect his nation [אלשיך].
