A sharp conflict arises between the slow, deliberate process of seeking Divine guidance and the immediate urgency of the battlefield. As King Saul turns to the priest to begin consulting the Urim and Thummim, the ceremonial preparations require a significant amount of time [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, while they are still speaking, a massive commotion erupts in the enemy camp. A roaring wave of noise rises from the Philistine lines [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. These are not just the sounds of a large crowd, but the distinct cries of a broken, defeated, and crushed army [רלב״ג, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך].

As the chaos from the enemy camp grows steadily louder and more intense, Saul realizes that the Philistines are fleeing in a state of Divine terror [רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. Faced with a rapidly changing situation, the king makes a swift military decision. He orders the priest to withdraw his hand and stop the consultation process entirely [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From a tactical standpoint, Saul concludes that the perfect moment to attack has arrived, leaving no time to wait for an answer from God [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Even though Saul's decision makes perfect sense from a military perspective, the sages view his actions with great severity. Halting the inquiry of the Urim and Thummim once the process has already begun is considered one of Saul's most serious failures. Ultimately, this act of impatience is recorded as one of the primary reasons his kingship was cut short and did not endure [אברבנאל, חומת אנך].
