I Samuel 14:39Sefaria

Seeking to uncover why divine providence has been withdrawn, Saul takes a severe oath in God's name to find the responsible party [מצודת דוד]. He makes an absolute commitment to justice, declaring that the very existence of the sin and guilt will be addressed [מצודת ציון]. Even if the fault rests upon his own beloved son and heir, Jonathan, the offender will face severe punishment

This uncompromising death sentence raises a difficult question: how could Jonathan, the very person who served as the instrument of Israel's salvation in the battle, be condemned to die? The answer operates on both a spiritual and a legal level [מלבי״ם]. Spiritually, the severity of a sin is measured by a person's greatness and closeness to God. Precisely because Jonathan had merited such profound divine providence, his failure was judged much more strictly. Legally, following the view of [רמב״ן], the leader and his court possess the authority to impose a public ban. Violating this type of national decree is a capital offense, a standard supported by earlier historical precedents like Joshua's ban and the punishment of the people of Jabesh Gilead.

Faced with Saul's intense declaration, the crowd stands completely silent. This lack of response is not born of ignorance. Certain individuals among the people are fully aware that Jonathan had tasted honey, directly violating the oath. However, they choose to remain quiet and keep the truth hidden from their leader [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
