שמואל א, פרק י״ד, פסוק י״ד

I Samuel 14:14Sefaria

A daring surprise attack by two lone warriors against a massive military camp serves as the turning point of an entire campaign. The Philistine soldiers, sitting unalert in their positions, initially reacted with contempt and shock at the sight of the two Hebrews. They had no idea of the strength these men possessed or the disaster that was about to unfold [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This initial clash functioned as the first strike, marking the very beginning of the enemy's downfall, which was later followed by further blows as the Israelites pursued them [מצודת דוד].

The two warriors managed to strike down about twenty men within a remarkably small physical space. The primary approach among commentators is that this area was no larger than half the distance a pair of oxen could plow in a single day. The dense concentration of twenty fallen soldiers in such a confined space leads to two contrasting perspectives on the state of the Philistine ranks. One view suggests this tight formation is evidence of their bravery and strict military discipline, showing that they stood closely packed and ready to support one another [רש״י]. Conversely, another perspective argues that this proximity actually highlights their complete shock and helplessness. Even though they were standing right next to each other, they were unable to organize or offer any mutual defense against the sudden assault [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the physical details of the battle, the specific measurement of this small area serves to emphasize the sheer magnitude of the miracle. Under normal circumstances, the loss of twenty soldiers at the edge of a vast military camp to a mere two attackers would not trigger a general panic. The enemy forces would be expected to quickly recover their senses and overwhelm the small threat. Yet, this highly localized strike triggered a profoundly supernatural event. The panic did not remain contained within that small plowed area. Instead, it miraculously spread throughout the entire garrison and reached the distant raiding parties, eventually causing the very earth to shake. This total, consuming terror proves that the Philistines were not experiencing a natural fear of the two men standing before them. Rather, a terror of God had fallen upon them, as God went ahead of the warriors to fight on their behalf [אלשיך].
