I Samuel 14:27Sefaria

In the thick of battle, exhaustion and intense hunger can push a warrior to the brink of collapse. Unaware of a strict oath placed upon the army, a simple act of eating to regain strength suddenly becomes a matter of life and death.

Jonathan was not present when Saul forced the people to swear an oath against eating, so he was completely unaware of the ban. Seeking to refresh himself during the fight, he tastes a bit of honey [אברבנאל]. His innocence in this matter is supported by three strong defenses. First, his action was an honest mistake born of ignorance regarding his father's oath. Second, he consumed only a tiny amount, merely dipping the end of his staff into the sweetness. It is highly doubtful that such a minimal taste even violated the king's decree. Finally, the physical reaction he experienced after eating proves he was suffering from extreme, life-threatening hunger. Under such severe conditions, eating is fully permitted by law to save a person's life [מלבי״ם].

The exact source of the sweetness he found is a matter of discussion. The primary approach among commentators is that he discovered a natural honeycomb, full of cells built by bees, with the honey still inside However, another perspective suggests he actually found sugar canes growing in the marshlands, much like standard reeds [רש״י]. To eat it, he simply lifted his hand, still holding the staff, directly to his mouth [מצודת דוד].

The physical relief provided by the food was immediate and dramatic. Due to his severe hunger and deep fatigue, his vision had blurred and his eyes had grown dark. The moment he tasted the honey, which gave his body an instant burst of energy, his strength returned. The light came back to his eyes, and his clear vision was fully restored
