They call out to the two Israelites. The Philistines demand that the Israelites come up to them, adding that they have something to tell them. This message is delivered with a tone of threat, contempt, and mockery. It functions as a cruel joke, much like a threat to teach someone a lesson [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, this arrogant taunt is precisely what seals their fate. For Jonathan, the enemy's invitation to advance is a clear indication that their courage has broken.
