שמואל א, פרק י״ד, פסוק ב׳

I Samuel 14:2Sefaria

The military standoff creates a tense atmosphere of stagnation and fear, setting the stage for Jonathan's bold and independent move. Saul positions himself at the very edge of the hill [רש״י], taking refuge in an area known as Migron [מצודת דוד]. He deliberately chooses to sit under a pomegranate tree at the southern end, far from the frontlines. This cautious placement stems directly from his anxiety about being discovered by the Philistine camp, especially given the dangerously small size of his army [מלבי״ם].

Despite being geographically close enough to offer assistance, Saul is left entirely in the dark. Jonathan decides against consulting him or requesting backup from the camp. He places his complete trust in a miracle from God, knowing well that his father would instantly reject any plan that defies natural military logic [אלשיך].

Remaining with Saul is a meager force of about six hundred men, who sit with him [מצודת דוד] and stay by his side with unwavering loyalty and devotion [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The specific mention of this number, which was already recorded earlier, highlights the grim reality of their situation. It reveals that not a single new soldier has joined their ranks since the last count [רד״ק]. This severe lack of manpower is precisely what paralyzes Saul with fear and drives his inaction [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, however, this small number serves a higher purpose. It amplifies the sheer magnitude of the impending miracle, proving that the future victory over the Philistine forces will not be won through physical strength, but entirely through God's salvation [רד״ק].
