I Samuel 14:47Sefaria

After enduring a period of deep uncertainty and constant threat, a dramatic shift takes place in the leadership of Israel. A formerly defensive leader transforms into a powerful king, taking the initiative to secure his nation's borders against all surrounding enemies.

The primary approach among commentators is that Saul firmly established his absolute grip on the throne. Following his significant military victories, particularly against the Philistines, the people developed a profound awe for him and submitted to his authority without question This political stabilization was accompanied by a deep personal transformation. Previously, even after being anointed as king, Saul had maintained his simple life as a farmer, tending to his cattle. Now, however, he fully embraces the honor and majesty required of a monarch, dedicating himself entirely to the demands of national leadership [אברבנאל].

However, another perspective views his assumption of power not as a natural, permanent acquisition, but rather as a temporary seizure. Because true and eternal kingship was ultimately destined for the tribe of Judah, Saul held the throne merely as a borrowed deposit. His reign was specifically designed for a single historical mission uniquely suited to the tribe of Benjamin: the complete destruction of the seed of Amalek [אלשיך].

Once his rule is fully secured, Saul stops waiting for enemies to strike. He launches proactive military campaigns across all fronts to fortify the kingdom's borders [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The impact he has on these hostile nations operates on several levels. Militarily and psychologically, he strikes terror into his enemies, leaving them shaken and confused On a moral and legal level, his campaigns are an act of justice. By fighting those who committed evil and violence against Israel, he effectively judges these hostile nations, finding them guilty before God and delivering the punishment for their wickedness Ultimately, his actions result in the absolute ruin and destruction of any force that rises against him, no matter which direction he turns [אברבנאל, רלב״ג].
