שמואל א, פרק י״ד, פסוק ח׳

I Samuel 14:8Sefaria

Jonathan plans a bold move to step out of hiding and deliberately expose himself and his armor-bearer to the Philistine camp [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. This decision is initially driven by the harsh reality of the terrain. The Philistines hold the high ground, while Jonathan and his attendant are forced to navigate the lower path between the cliffs, making their discovery inevitable. At the same time, Jonathan intends to use this exposure as a tactical maneuver, pretending to defect to the enemy in order to hand over secret information regarding Saul's plans [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Once out in the open, Jonathan plans to execute a fateful test that will dictate whether or not they attack. The choice to risk his life and base his entire strategy on the enemy's reaction seems highly dangerous. The primary approach among commentators [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם] explains that this test is not rooted in standard military logic or necessity. Rather, it is designed to explicitly gauge Divine providence. The Philistines could react in an endless number of ways; they might attack in immediate silence, or they could shout a variety of challenges, demanding the Israelites come closer or preparing for a fight.

To eliminate any ambiguity, Jonathan determines that if the Philistines use the exact, specific words he defines in advance, it will serve as absolute proof that God has placed those words in their mouths. Such an exact occurrence cannot be dismissed as coincidence. Instead, it reveals the presence of the Holy Spirit, confirming that Divine providence is actively guiding them. This profound reliance on an enemy's exact phrasing mirrors the earlier story of Gideon, who was instructed to listen to the conversations of the Midianite guards right before battle to understand that God had delivered the enemy into his hands.
