שמואל א, פרק כ״ה, פסוק ו׳

I Samuel 25:6Sefaria

A profound greeting can transcend simple politeness, becoming a multi-dimensional blessing of peace and longevity directed toward a person of influence. Such a greeting builds gradually, starting with a general wish for life and expanding to surround every aspect of a person's existence with wholeness and tranquility.

When extending this well-wish, the primary approach among commentators is to view it as a blessing for the future. It expresses a hope that the recipient's current prosperity will continue into the next year at the exact same season [רש״י, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it serves as a broader wish for a long life, hoping that goodness will accompany the individual throughout their entire journey [מצודת דוד, רד״ק].

However, the opening of this blessing can also be understood not as a reference to time, but as a descriptive title for the recipient. In this light, the message is addressed to someone who is highly important and active [רש״י], or to a man of great wealth [רד״ק], instructing the messenger to deliver words of peace specifically to this elevated individual. Beyond the earthly meaning, there is a hidden layer rooted in mystical tradition [חומת אנך]. This perspective suggests that the greeting is actually directed upward, intended to create spiritual unifications in the higher realms. Just as someone might greet a friend while secretly directing their praise to the Creator, the outward blessing is spoken to the man, but its inner essence is directed entirely to God.

The message then unfolds into a wish for absolute, undisturbed tranquility [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It is carefully structured into three separate circles that encompass all the success a person can achieve [מלבי״ם]. The first circle focuses inward, wishing peace upon the person's own body and soul. The second circle expands to include the safety and well-being of the family and close relatives. Finally, the third and broadest circle covers the entirety of the person's material life, bringing a blessing of wholeness to their property, possessions, and everything associated with them.
