שמואל א, פרק כ״ה, פסוק ט׳

I Samuel 25:9Sefaria

The arrival of David's messengers at Nabal's estate marks a critical moment of tension. Tasked with requesting support and compensation for the protection they provided, the men act exactly according to their leader's instructions. Their approach is designed to be entirely respectful and appeasing, yet it sets the stage for a harsh confrontation. The messengers deliver their words of goodwill and pleading without any alteration, speaking strictly on David's behalf rather than their own. By ensuring they do not add any personal insults or flaws to the message, they leave absolutely no justification for a disrespectful response [מלבי״ם].

Once the message is delivered, a significant pause occurs. The primary approach among commentators is that this pause represents silence. The messengers simply finish speaking and quietly wait for Nabal's reply. This respectful silence further highlights Nabal's poor character, as the men offer no provoking remarks that could possibly trigger his anger [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. Alternatively, this pause is understood as literal physical rest from a tiring journey. Although the men are exhausted from their travels, their dedication to David's orders is so strong that they refuse to rest until the mission is completely fulfilled [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others suggest that this period of rest actually takes place before they speak. In this view, the messengers wait patiently for the most ideal moment to approach and appease Nabal, a detail that makes his eventual stubborn and callous refusal seem even more unreasonable [רלב״ג].

Taking a completely different perspective, some suggest that the messengers physically settle themselves right inside Nabal's home. Immediately after delivering their request, and without waiting for permission, they put down their belongings and make themselves comfortable as if they have a right to the space. This bold behavior, combined with the sudden appearance of ten men demanding provisions for an army of six hundred, is precisely what provokes the miserly Nabal's rage and leads to his fierce rejection [אברבנאל].
