שמואל א, פרק כ״ה, פסוק ב׳

I Samuel 25:2Sefaria

While the nation mourns the death of the prophet Samuel, a wealthy man in the southern territory of Judah prepares for a major agricultural festival. The specifics of his location, the sheer scale of his wealth, and the timing of his celebration are not merely background details. They form the necessary foundation for understanding a looming conflict and a demand soon to be made by David.

The man resides in the city of Maon, but his vast estates, livestock, and demanding agricultural operations are located in nearby Carmel, bordering the desert region where David is currently hiding [מצודת ציון, רד״ק, רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that he simply lives in one city while his fields and property are in another [רלב״ג]. However, this geographic separation carries deeper significance. Because his herds are far from his home, he cannot personally protect them from wild animals or bandits. This vulnerability explains why David's men step in to serve as a protective wall for the shepherds. It also clarifies why David feels completely justified in demanding payment for this security. He views it as the collection of a legitimate debt for services rendered, rather than demanding political support for a rebel, meaning the man would not be endangered in the eyes of King Saul [אלשיך]. Furthermore, because the man lives in Maon, he is highly familiar with David's presence in the exact same area and cannot later claim ignorance of who David is [מלבי״ם].

The man is exceptionally wealthy [רש״י, רלב״ג], possessing a massive flock of sheep specifically raised for their wool, alongside a separate herd of goats [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This emphasis on his immense fortune serves to highlight that providing food for David's men would be a trivial expense for a person of such vast means [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

The central event takes place during the sheep-shearing season in Carmel. Traditionally, this is a festive time marked by a large, lavish banquet with abundant food prepared for the workers and shearers [רש״י]. This timing is crucial because it proves the man has plenty of food readily available and cannot claim he lacks the resources to help [מלבי״ם]. On a deeper level, choosing to host a luxurious and joyful feast while the rest of the nation is in mourning for Samuel exposes a severe moral failing. The man's complete detachment from the public sadness reveals a deeply flawed character, which will ultimately lead to his downfall and punishment [אברבנאל].
