I Samuel 25:7Sefaria

In the harsh environment of the desert borderlands, unwritten agreements governed the relationships between wandering armed groups and local farmers. During the festive sheep-shearing season, David sends messengers to a wealthy landowner named Nabal, presenting a request for provisions. This request is not a plea for charity, but a claim for fair compensation based on real services rendered. Armed bands in that era often functioned as an unofficial police force, offering protection to vulnerable shepherds and agricultural workers against wandering nomads and bandits [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. David’s messengers carefully lay out how their men fulfilled this role for Nabal's workers, highlighting two distinct levels of proper treatment.

First, they emphasize their strict restraint. Unlike other armed factions that might exploit their power, David’s men never harmed Nabal’s shepherds [מלבי״ם]. They avoided instigating fights or causing any trouble [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, they never mocked the workers or stole from the herds, ensuring the shepherds would not face the shame of presenting a short count to their master [רלב״ג]. Beyond simply doing no harm, whenever the shepherds approached them needing assistance, David's men never turned them away

Second, the messengers highlight their active defense of the flocks. They did not merely stand by; they served as dedicated guards [רש״י]. They actively protected the animals from wild predators and thieves Because of this constant vigilance, not a single animal went missing during the entire period the shepherds spent alongside them in the region

Because of this extensive support, David and his men approach Nabal feeling fully justified in their request. The sheep-shearing festival was traditionally a time to honor and reward the shepherds. Having played such a vital role in keeping the flocks safe, David’s men view themselves as an extension of Nabal's own shepherding team. Therefore, they feel it is only right that they participate in the celebration and receive a fair reward for their hard work [מלבי״ם].
