וְדָוִ֣ד אָמַ֗ר אַךְ֩ לַשֶּׁ֨קֶר שָׁמַ֜רְתִּי אֶֽת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר לָזֶה֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְלֹא־נִפְקַ֥ד מִכׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ מְא֑וּמָה וַיָּשֶׁב־לִ֥י רָעָ֖ה תַּ֥חַת טוֹבָֽה׃

A deep sense of frustration and insult naturally arises when hard work and dedication are met with blatant ingratitude. After faithfully protecting Nabal's property in the harsh wilderness, David experiences the sharp pain of being answered with utter disrespect instead of appreciation.

Commentators differ on exactly when and how David expresses this pain. Some suggest his reaction is entirely internal, an immediate thought formed in his heart the moment his men return with news of Nabal's curses [רש"י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Others present a more public scene, suggesting David speaks his frustration aloud to his men right as he encounters Abigail on the road, or perhaps just as he sees Nabal's servants and donkeys approaching with food [מלבי"ם, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

Regardless of the exact moment, the core of David's complaint is that his dedicated watchfulness was completely in vain, yielding absolutely no reward. Even though not a single item of Nabal's property was lost under his watch, the repayment he receives is a bitter wrong. This wrong is not a physical attack, but rather the deep humiliation and scorn Nabal hurls at him, dismissively questioning his very identity [רד"ק, מצודת דוד].

Beneath the surface of this personal insult lies a firm legal and financial claim. David is not looking for charity or a free handout. According to standard law, a person who actively works for another or guards their property earns a rightful wage for their effort. Nabal is therefore legally obligated to pay him. This underlying debt explains David's later willingness to accept the large supply of food brought by Abigail. Normally, accepting a substantial gift from a married woman without her husband's permission is forbidden. In this specific case, however, it is completely permitted. The food is not a gift, but rather the rightful collection of a legal debt that Nabal already owes for services rendered [חומת אנך].
