שמואל א, פרק כ״ה, פסוק ל״ו

I Samuel 25:36Sefaria

Abigail returns home after narrowly saving her household from destruction, only to walk into a deeply ironic scene. Her husband, Nabal, is obliviously hosting a massive celebration to mark the end of the sheep-shearing season [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The sheer scale of this gathering, likened to a royal banquet, plays a crucial role in understanding both Nabal's character and Abigail's careful actions. Because the feast was so extravagant, Nabal completely failed to notice the enormous amount of food Abigail had secretly taken to offer as a peace gift to David. Had he realized the provisions were missing, she would have been forced to explain herself on the spot [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, this tremendous abundance sharply highlights Nabal's deep stinginess and cruelty. He possessed enough wealth to throw a lavish party without lacking a single thing, yet he refused to share even a small portion with David and his men [חומת אנך].

During the festivities, Nabal was in high spirits and completely content [מצודת ציון]. However, his apparent lack of concern over the vast expense of feeding so many guests might simply have been because he was entirely drunk and unaware of his surroundings [חומת אנך]. Seeing his condition, Abigail acts with profound wisdom and chooses to remain completely silent until morning. She had several reasons for keeping the night's dramatic events to herself. First, she did not want to ruin his mood and spoil the festive atmosphere for the workers. More importantly, his severe intoxication made him unpredictable and dangerous. She feared that if she confessed immediately, the wine would fuel a violent rage. He might have physically harmed her, reacted with intense jealousy over her secret meeting with David, or exploded in anger over the valuable goods she had given away [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

By waiting patiently for the dawn, Abigail ensures that her husband will be sober enough to understand the gravity of what had occurred. Only the next morning does she finally reveal the truth, a sudden realization that ultimately triggers his utter shock and death [אברבנאל].
