בִּצְדָקָ֖ה תִּכּוֹנָ֑נִי רַחֲקִ֤י מֵעֹ֙שֶׁק֙ כִּי־לֹ֣א תִירָ֔אִי וּמִ֨מְּחִתָּ֔ה כִּ֥י לֹֽא־תִקְרַ֖ב אֵלָֽיִךְ׃

The promise of future redemption presents a vision of a society built on solid foundations of justice, where spiritual and physical security replaces past anxieties. The final establishment and preparation of the city will be rooted in stability [מלבי״ם, מצודת ציון]. The primary approach among commentators is that this future building will rise through good deeds, moral honesty, and true justice practiced by the Israelites in the world, standing in sharp contrast to the exploitative habits of foreign kings [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective focuses specifically on financial charity given to the poor, noting that Jerusalem is redeemed solely through acts of kindness [נחל שורק, חומת אנך, צאינה וראינה]. Additionally, this solid foundation is formed through the study of Torah, which actively protects those who learn it [חומת אנך].

Growing from this moral groundwork is a profound shift away from oppression, functioning as a divine promise for the future [מלבי״ם, רד״ק]. Commentators differ on what this distance entails. One approach views it passively, promising that the Israelites will be protected and kept far away from strangers who might try to rob them of their wealth [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Conversely, another approach interprets this as an active standard for the people themselves, requiring them to refrain from oppressing others. Because they will live in peace and no longer fear poverty, the urge to steal will vanish, as dishonesty often stems from existential fear [רש״י, אברבנאל, שטיינזלץ]. This separation must be absolute, extending even to the mere thought of exploitation [שד״ל]. Furthermore, when people give charity, they must ensure their funds are entirely clean of any hint of robbery or oppression; otherwise, the charity loses its spiritual power [חומת אנך, אהבת יהונתן].

The ultimate result of this righteous society is absolute security, free from ruin, trouble, and deep fear [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. By walking in the path of justice and charity, these dangers will be entirely blocked from coming close [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. On a practical level, individuals will no longer need to worry that giving charity will lead to their own poverty [נחל שורק]. Ideally, this giving should flow from a pure love of God, rather than a fear of punishment or disaster [אהבת יהונתן]. Looking at the broader picture, the Israelites sustain the entire world through their acts of kindness. In the future, they will no longer need to endure the oppression of foreign nations to justify their existence or their right to enjoy the good of the world. Instead, they will stand securely on the merit of their own kindness and charity [אדרת אליהו].
