ישעיהו, פרק נ״ח, פסוק ח׳

When a person corrects their behavior and chooses to walk a straight path, they are promised deep physical and spiritual rewards. The primary approach among commentators is that these promises depend entirely on performing proper deeds. Once a person commits to this right way of living, they no longer need outward signs of mourning like fasting, sackcloth, and ashes [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The resulting spiritual success and happiness are compared to a sudden burst of morning light breaking through dark clouds [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This light represents true success and joy [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, צאינה וראינה]. The imagery of the dawn—the initial light that appears just before the sun rises [מצודת ציון]—illustrates a natural, gradual process. Just as the morning light emerges at the end of the night and grows steadily brighter with each passing moment, salvation will arrive at its proper time and increase little by little [מלבי״ם, אבן עזרא, רד״ק].

Alongside this spiritual awakening, there is a promise of physical and financial recovery [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. This healing marks the end of a set period of illness [אבן עזרא]. Much like the gradual rise of the dawn, this recovery is compared to a plant naturally and steadily growing from the earth [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

Finally, there is a powerful promise of a person being surrounded and gathered in by their own good deeds and the glory of God [מצודת ציון]. There are two main ways to understand this gathering. The first approach focuses on life in this world, presenting a picture of ultimate protection and honor. A person's righteous deeds walk ahead of them, announcing their merits, while God's glory acts as a rear guard that follows, accompanies, and protects them from any harm [מלבי״ם, שד״ל, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The second approach views this as a promise for the world to come, after a person passes away. In this view, the charity a person gave during their lifetime will walk ahead to advocate for them and lead them to the Garden of Eden, while God's glory will gather their soul to the safe place where the souls of the righteous are kept [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, צאינה וראינה].
