איוב, פרק ב׳, פסוק א׳

Job 2:1Sefaria

Following the devastating loss of his family and wealth, Job remains steadfast, having endured a severe trial of faith. Meanwhile, in the heavenly realms, another gathering takes place. The heavenly beings assemble to present themselves before God, resembling a military review that occurs at set times [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This assembly happens on a specific, predetermined day of judgment, bringing together both the angels of merit and the angels of guilt [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן]. The Satan once again joins this divine council.

The nature of the Satan's arrival in this second gathering carries a subtle distinction, as he is now explicitly described as presenting himself directly before God [תקות אנוש, רמב״ן]. One perspective suggests a shift in his initial motive. During the first heavenly meeting, the holy angels arrived to stand before God, whereas the Satan came solely to accuse. Now, having witnessed Job's unwavering resilience and realizing his previous accusations were ineffective, the Satan arrives simply to take his place among the angels, rather than to accuse [אלשיך]. Conversely, another view emphasizes that the Satan is not a permanent member of this inner circle, as God does not desire the destruction of the wicked. He only joins the ranks to accuse and judge the nations when granted special permission, making his formal presentation before God highly unusual [רמב״ן].

A more philosophical approach connects the Satan's direct presentation to the changing nature of Job's trials. The initial disasters that claimed Job's property and children were driven by natural forces and human enemies. For those tragedies to occur, God merely needed to withdraw His divine protection, allowing evil to naturally take its course. The impending trial, however, involves severe physical affliction. As a righteous man, Job maintained a balanced and healthy lifestyle, naturally distancing himself from habits that cause illness. Simply removing divine protection would not be enough to make him sick. Therefore, inflicting physical sickness required an active, unnatural intervention. To achieve this, the Satan had to stand directly before God to request His active, direct involvement in striking Job's body [מלבי״ם].
