In the depths of severe suffering, Job holds onto an absolute certainty of his own innocence and righteousness. Even when feeling entirely cut off and hidden from the Creator, he finds a profound anchor in knowing that God is intimately aware of his pure actions. He understands that standing firm through the trial of his pain will ultimately prove his moral cleanliness.
The primary approach among commentators is that God actually hides Himself and avoids a direct confrontation precisely because He knows this truth. Since God sees that Job has clung to the good path without straying [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ], He has no actual grounds to argue with him or find fault [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. On the other hand, another perspective suggests that it is exactly because God is the ultimate, absolute witness to his flawless behavior that Job yearns so deeply to stand before Him in judgment and plead his case [רמב״ן]. Furthermore, even when Job feels lost and cannot find his way to God, he realizes that God knows exactly how to reach him [מלבי״ם].
Job views the agony of his experience as a blazing furnace meant to test metal [תקות אנוש, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that emerging from this fire like gold signifies surviving the ordeal with absolute purity. It means coming out without a single trace of sin, impurity, or improper thought in the service of God [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם], while holding firmly to complete honesty and integrity [תקות אנוש].
Looking deeper into the nature of such divine tests reveals two possible reasons God might bring trials upon a righteous person. The first is for internal refinement, helping the person overcome negative urges, much like melting down silver to remove its impurities. The second reason is to make the person's righteousness known to the public, similar to rubbing gold against a touchstone to prove its high quality to everyone watching. Facing these possibilities, Job directs a powerful argument toward God: if the purpose of the pain was simply to reveal what lies in his heart, God already knows the truth of his path. And if the purpose was to display his righteousness to the world, the test has already been passed, and his pure gold character has been shown to all. Therefore, there is simply no reason to prolong the suffering [אלשיך].
