איוב, פרק כ״ח, פסוק ז׳

Job 28:7Sefaria

נָ֭תִיב לֹא־יְדָ֣עוֹ עָ֑יִט וְלֹ֥א שְׁ֝זָפַ֗תּוּ עֵ֣ין אַיָּֽה׃

The depths of the earth and the far edges of the world hold secrets and hidden places completely out of human reach. These remote locations remain unseen even by the sharpest eyes in the animal kingdom. The primary approach among commentators is that a hidden path exists, one completely unknown to desert birds and birds of prey. One bird in particular is noted for its incredibly sharp vision, capable of perching as far away as Babylon and spotting its prey all the way in the Land of Israel [רש״י, רמב״ן, שטיינזלץ]. Yet, even this creature cannot see this hidden path.

Building on this concept, commentators offer different ways to understand the nature of this unseen path. One approach points to the extreme ends of the earth, describing areas completely uninhabited due to severe climates of extreme cold or heat. These regions are so desolate that even birds capable of crossing massive distances in a short time never fly over them, leaving them entirely unseen [תקות אנוש]. This description serves as an exaggeration to emphasize just how remote and desolate the area truly is [מצודת דוד].

In contrast to a geographic path on the surface, another perspective looks deep beneath the ground. According to this view, the path is actually a narrow, hidden underground water channel that drops from a mountain peak into deep caves. While this channel remains completely hidden from all living things, the water rushing through it builds tremendous pressure, capable of splitting solid rocks and uprooting entire mountains [מלבי״ם].

Moving away from the natural world entirely, an allegorical approach applies these concepts to human and military realities. In this view, the animals serve as symbols for people. The birds of prey represent bands of robbers and bandits, while the far-seeing bird represents enemy spies. The hidden path, therefore, describes a location so perfectly guarded and concealed that no enemy force has ever marched through it, and no spy has ever managed to uncover its existence [רש״י].
