Job 28:18Sefaria

True wisdom possesses a value so immense that it completely eclipses the most magnificent material wealth. The profound effort required to attain such understanding stands in sharp contrast to the pursuit of physical riches, rendering even the rarest precious stones entirely insignificant.

The primary approach among commentators is that certain highly valued, rare gems are typically found deep within the sea [רש״י]. Taking a different angle, [מלבי״ם] suggests that the value of these specific stones actually stems from their lofty origin, as they fall from the high heavens. Regardless of their physical source, these treasures lose all their importance when compared to true wisdom. They are considered so inferior that they are reduced to nothing and will not even be taken into account Following the view of [מלבי״ם], these heavenly stones are entirely forgotten because the source of wisdom resides in a realm far higher than the skies from which they fall.

The pursuit of wisdom is further compared to the gathering of pearls, those smooth gems extracted from shells in the darkest ocean depths The act of drawing wisdom carries several complementary meanings. The primary approach among commentators views this process as the intense effort, deep study, and mental exertion required to absorb knowledge and bring it into reality. This intellectual labor is far more demanding and valuable than the physical task of harvesting pearls Another perspective focuses on the source itself. Just as pearls are pulled from the deep sea, wisdom must be drawn from an even more hidden and profound place, making its discovery far more precious [רמב״ן, מלבי״ם]. Additionally, [רמב״ן] notes that wisdom itself is drawn upward, rising higher than any physical gem.

On a deeper, allegorical level, this contrast serves as a metaphor for the different dimensions of Torah study [אלשיך]. The rare gems symbolize the profound secrets of the Torah or its hidden hints. In contrast, the act of drawing wisdom represents the study of homiletic teachings, which have the unique ability to draw in a person's heart. It also points to the vital lessons extracted from those hidden hints, which ultimately prove more precious and captivating than any material pearl.
