Job 28:11Sefaria

מִ֭בְּכִי נְהָר֣וֹת חִבֵּ֑שׁ וְ֝תַעֲלֻמָ֗הּ יֹ֣צִא אֽוֹר׃ {פ}

God possesses absolute mastery over the forces of nature, holding the power to halt the most violent currents and bring deeply buried mysteries into the light. This display of ultimate control serves as a profound lesson about the boundaries of human comprehension and the hidden nature of Divine wisdom.

The primary approach among commentators understands this display of power as God restraining the deep, rushing currents of mighty waters Some view these waters as wild, chaotic rivers flowing without a clear path [מלבי"ם]. God blocks and stops these powerful streams [רלב"ג, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא], an action compared to firmly tying and binding a wild animal [רש"י, חומת אנך, מלבי"ם]. Other perspectives connect this restraint to the concept of weeping. This can refer to the lower waters crying out during the creation of the world, the Israelites weeping from thirst in the desert [רש"י], or the complete drying of a river until not a single drop remains, much like a dried tear [חומת אנך].

Once the waters are restrained, hidden things are brought out into the light. The prevailing explanation is that when God dams and dries up rivers, the sunlight finally reaches the riverbed, revealing lost treasures and secrets that were swept away and hidden from human eyes A similar view suggests that God binds these wild rivers to specific paths through the mountains. As the fierce currents wash away the earth, they expose precious metals and treasures buried deep within the rock [מלבי"ם]. According to a different tradition, rather than referring to hidden objects, this bringing forth of light describes a special window in the heavens from which the sun's rays burst forth

These natural phenomena carry deep philosophical weight. The demonstration of God's control over nature teaches that just as mighty rivers have a boundary and an end, all material pursuits are limited. Therefore, a person should never rely solely on physical success [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the ability to alter the natural order, such as turning fertile land into a wasteland, highlights the human inability to understand how God runs the world. This explains why people struggle to comprehend mysteries like why the wicked prosper. Just as a person cannot fully explore the bottom of the ocean, human beings cannot grasp Divine wisdom. Everything in the physical world has a beginning and an end, but God's wisdom is truly infinite

On a mystical level, this process hints at spiritual repair. The sin of the first man caused a cosmic confusion, trapping and binding the heavenly rivers that deliver souls within forces of impurity. God’s ultimate action is to extract the light of holiness from that darkness and concealment, bringing it forth completely pure and cleansed [אלשיך].
