איוב, פרק כ״ח, פסוק ב׳

Job 28:2Sefaria

בַּ֭רְזֶל מֵעָפָ֣ר יֻקָּ֑ח וְ֝אֶ֗בֶן יָצ֥וּק נְחוּשָֽׁה׃

The depths of the earth hold valuable resources, waiting for human knowledge to penetrate the soil and extract them. Yet, these physical materials, despite their raw strength, carry deep meaning about the temporary nature of the world and how God guides humanity.

Iron is mined directly from the dirt. Copper, however, requires a more complex effort. It is rarely found in nature as a pure mass; instead, it is bound within earth and rocks. Humans must break apart the hard stone and melt it down to refine and extract the copper [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, this process highlights the sheer toughness of the source material, indicating that copper is drawn from an exceptionally solid and unyielding stone [רלב״ג].

Beyond the technical work of mining, these metals carry a profound moral message. The primary approach among commentators is that because these materials have a visible earthly origin, they are ultimately finite. Just as mines will eventually run empty, everything in the physical world has a beginning and an end, demonstrating that the entire world and everything in it can perish [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

Taking a more spiritual direction, the [אלשיך] connects these metals to the human experience of hardship. Iron and copper act as a metaphor for severe suffering that can crush a person. God created a system of balance within the world. The exact same earth that produces joyful treasures like silver and gold also yields iron. This proximity serves as a deliberate wake-up call. When wealth leads a person to arrogance and rebellion, the harshness of iron and copper arrives as a form of suffering to rouse them from their spiritual slumber, ultimately guiding them back to the proper path.
