A profound gap exists between the material human condition and true wisdom, making it impossible to measure or obtain through ordinary means. The primary approach among commentators is that humanity simply fails to understand the true value of this wisdom [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. There are several reasons for this disconnect. Because wisdom is eternal, no physical object can ever serve as a point of comparison [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, people easily understand the worth of gold and silver because these metals satisfy immediate physical needs. Wisdom, however, is a spiritual quality of the soul. Driven by material desires, people often fail to recognize its importance and do not seek it out [מלבי״ם]. Beyond human neglect, the very nature of this wisdom is so elevated that the human mind is fundamentally incapable of grasping it [רמב״ן].

Taking a different approach, the lack of human knowledge might not refer to wisdom's value, but rather to its hidden dwelling place [רמב״ן]. Another unique perspective focuses on the specific identity of those who fail to value it. In this view, the ignorance of wisdom's worth applies specifically to the nations of the world, distinguishing them from the people of Israel [אלשיך].

The search for wisdom is further complicated by its complete absence from the mortal realm. On a basic level, it is not found in the visible spaces where people live on earth [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. It is entirely detached from the physical world, belonging instead to a purely intellectual and heavenly domain [מלבי״ם].

On a conceptual level, the realm of the living represents a lifestyle of comfort and ease. True wisdom cannot be acquired by someone pursuing physical luxury; it is only found by those willing to sacrifice their material needs and dedicate themselves to tireless effort [רש״י]. Finally, looking beyond the human experience, the realm of the living can also refer to the domain of immortal beings who never experience death. In this ultimate sense, the highest levels of wisdom are so deeply concealed that they were not given even to the ministering angels [אלשיך].
