איוב, פרק כ״ח, פסוק כ״א

Job 28:21Sefaria

וְֽ֭נֶעֶלְמָה מֵעֵינֵ֣י כׇל־חָ֑י וּמֵע֖וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם נִסְתָּֽרָה׃

Divine wisdom exists entirely beyond the reach of both earthly and heavenly beings. It cannot be discovered through physical searches or grasped through intellectual effort. The nature of this inaccessibility takes two forms: it is completely hidden from intellect and understanding, while also remaining physically concealed from sight [מלבי״ם]. The reality of this physical world, inhabited by mortals and animals, is fundamentally incapable of comprehending the true nature of this wisdom [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that the mention of the creatures of the sky is a poetic reference to actual birds. Birds soar high into the atmosphere, drawing physically closer to the heavens, which are considered the ultimate source of wisdom [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. They travel vast distances across the sky [רמב״ן], and their elevated vantage point allows them to look down and observe everything below [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, despite their sweeping vision and high altitude, true wisdom remains completely hidden from their sight.

In contrast to this physical interpretation, another approach views these subjects as elevated spiritual entities. In this light, the living creatures represent the ministering angels, while the flying birds refer specifically to angels in flight [רש״י], or even the angel Gabriel. According to this understanding, divine wisdom is so profoundly concealed that even the highest ministering angels could not perceive it when God delivered it to Moses at Mount Sinai [אלשיך].
