Elihu's response to Job addresses the deep frustration of enduring severe hardship while God appears to remain silent. The dialogue explores the true nature of divine punishment, the limits of human understanding, and the hidden mercy that often exists within suffering.

One perspective suggests that Job's afflictions are actually an expression of grace. His current pain is minimal compared to the true weight of his actions. God restrains His anger, acting as though He does not see the full extent of Job's wrongdoing [רש״י]. Because Job remains completely unaware of the much greater punishment he actually deserves, he continues to complain, firmly believing in his own absolute righteousness [רמב״ן]. From Job's own point of view, however, the situation looks entirely different. He feels that God is punishing him unjustly and completely ignoring his endless cries for help, acting as if He is unaware of his pain [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אבן עזרא].

Another approach links the suffering to a failure in social responsibility. In this view, God hides His face and withdraws because wickedness was allowed to spread unchecked. Although Job was personally righteous, he failed to protest or take action against the corruption around him. Because Job did not understand that his passivity was the root cause of his trials, the divine anger intensified and brought about his disasters [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

A completely different approach suggests that Job did not sin at all in his current life. Instead, his suffering is meant to correct the wrongs of a previous lifetime. Furthermore, God did not inflict this pain directly, but handed the judgment over to a destructive angel. Lacking the divine capacity for mercy or restraint, this force inflicts severe, boundless pain, multiplying the torment far beyond what is strictly necessary [אלשיך]. In such situations, destructive forces can strike without pity, creating the illusion that God's careful supervision has entirely vanished [תקות אנוש].
