Harsh complaints directed toward Heaven do not always come from a deep-seated rebellion; often, they are born from intense pain and a limited understanding of reality. Concluding his rebuke, Elihu summarizes his argument by declaring that Job's claims are entirely baseless. He accuses Job of opening his mouth only to pour out an excessive stream of empty words, demonstrating a complete misunderstanding of how divine providence operates.

The primary approach among commentators is that Elihu faults Job for speaking absolute nonsense. Job mistakenly argues that God perverts justice, ignores ordinary people, and leaves the righteous with no advantage over the wicked [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. Because he failed to wait patiently for God [ביאור שטיינזלץ], Job jumps to a false, sweeping conclusion. By focusing only on the minority of evil in the world and ignoring the overwhelming presence of good, he incorrectly assumes that God has abandoned the earth [רלב״ג].

This lack of awareness goes even deeper. Job fails to recognize that human actions do not benefit or harm God in any way; they only impact human beings themselves [רלב״ג]. Furthermore, he cannot see that he bears responsibility for his own suffering. Whether this pain came because he failed to protest against the wicked people of his time, or simply as a natural consequence of his own choices, reward and punishment are inherently woven into human behavior [מלבי״ם, רלב״ג].

Commentators offer different perspectives on what drove Job to speak with such a lack of knowledge. One view suggests that his severe agony simply clouded his mind, causing him to scatter empty statements without thinking clearly [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective points to a gradual psychological and spiritual decline. According to this approach, Job never intended to hurl harsh accusations at God. Instead, what began as a minor, foolish slip of the tongue caused him to lose control, eventually spiraling into an exaggerated flood of bitter complaints [אלשיך].
