As Elihu begins a new phase of his defense, he frames his words as a direct extension of what he has already said. Commentators offer two distinct ways to understand the nature of this addition. From a structural perspective, Elihu has already delivered three speeches, mirroring the arguments of Job's three friends. Therefore, a fourth speech breaks the original pattern and stands as an unexpected addition [רש״י]. Alternatively, the addition can be understood through the content itself. According to this view, Elihu has already completely answered all of Job's complaints. His current words are simply meant to reinforce and solidly establish his earlier claims [מצודת דוד].
Opening this additional address, Elihu asks Job for a measure of patience and respect. He requests that Job wait and listen, because there are still critical arguments that must be presented on behalf of God. Elihu makes it clear that he intends to continue speaking in God's place, providing the necessary answers to the harsh accusations Job has directed toward Him [תקות אנוש].
