איוב, פרק מ״ב, פסוק י״ז

Job 42:17Sefaria

וַיָּ֣מׇת אִיּ֔וֹב זָקֵ֖ן וּשְׂבַ֥ע יָמִֽים׃

The conclusion of Job's turbulent and agonizing life story brings a scene of acceptance, peace, and reconciliation. After losing his entire world, enduring severe suffering, and confronting his friends and God over questions of reward, punishment, and the management of the world, his life draws to a close in a state of calm and completeness. At the most basic level, he lived a very long life and was blessed with so much good that he reached a state of total satisfaction from the abundance he experienced [מצודת דוד]. His final days were spent surrounded by honor and joy [אבן עזרא].

Beyond physical and material satisfaction lies a deeper psychological and spiritual reality. Typically, a righteous person feels sadness on the day of death, knowing they can no longer live and continue serving God. Job, however, served God so perfectly that he reached the end of his life completely satisfied, without any feeling of missed opportunity [אלשיך]. Another perspective suggests that the days of a righteous person remain in existence. At the moment of passing, these days draw near to show the person all the merits they have collected throughout their lifetime. In this way, Job was able to look back upon his days and find profound joy in them [אלשיך].

This peaceful end also brings the story full circle, resolving the deep anguish from the beginning of his suffering. In the depths of his earlier pain, Job had cried out that human life is painfully short and full of anger. By the end of his journey, his situation and his perspective were completely repaired. He did not live a short life, and more importantly, he was no longer full of anger. Instead, he passed away entirely free of bitterness, filled only with days and joy [אלשיך].
