איוב, פרק מ״ב, פסוק ה׳

Job 42:5Sefaria

לְשֵֽׁמַע־אֹ֥זֶן שְׁמַעְתִּ֑יךָ וְ֝עַתָּ֗ה עֵינִ֥י רָאָֽתְךָ׃

A profound spiritual transformation marks the climax of Job's long journey, representing a shift from distant tradition to a direct encounter that forever alters his understanding of divine justice and providence. Until this pivotal moment, Job's understanding of God and His immense power was entirely indirect. It was fed by rumors, accepted traditions, and teachings passed down from others [רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ, תקות אנוש]. This implies that Job had not previously experienced prophecy himself; he had merely heard that prophets, such as the early patriarchs, existed in the world [אבן עזרא]. Relying solely on what one hears creates a foundation of belief, but it falls short of absolute clarity, leaving the door open for lingering doubts [מלבי״ם]. Information that is merely heard does not etch itself deeply into the human heart [מצודת דוד].

The transformation occurs through a direct revelation of the Divine Presence, elevating Job to the level of true prophecy [רש״י, רמב״ן]. This elevation may have been brought about by his very suffering. Just as Abraham achieved prophetic vision only after enduring trials and entering the land of Israel, Job's severe hardships purified him, lifting him from the level of merely hearing to the absolute clarity of seeing [אלשיך].

This direct prophetic encounter instantly resolves all of Job's agonizing questions. The experience carves the truth deeply into his heart, leading him to abandon his former arguments and submit completely to God's wisdom [מצודת דוד, תקות אנוש]. Through this firsthand experience, the true nature of reality becomes clear to him: God actively watches over human affairs, judging them with a perfect blend of justice and kindness [רמב״ן].

Furthermore, the very fact that he can experience such a profound prophetic vision proves to Job that the human soul exists independently of the physical body and is capable of attaching itself directly to God. He realizes that true reward is entirely spiritual. In light of this spiritual refinement, physical existence and its associated pains become insignificant. With this profound understanding, the agonizing question of why the righteous suffer is finally answered, and all previous doubts are replaced by bright, clear knowledge [מלבי״ם].
