Judges 17:5Sefaria

A profound spiritual decline takes root when an individual establishes a private, independent system of worship within their own home. This progression represents a chain of compounding sins, where each offense leads to another of increasing severity [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. To house a unique and significant idol provided by his mother [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], Micah builds a dedicated miniature temple. The primary approach among commentators is that this structure was explicitly intended for idol worship, noting that nearly every reference to a deity in this narrative points to idolatry However, an alternative perspective suggests that his original intention was actually to draw down spiritual abundance from God, operating under the mistaken belief that the Divine Presence would rest in this private shrine [רלב״ג, אברבנאל].

The private worship system quickly expands. While the original idol was financed by his mother, the new ritual accessories are funded entirely by his own wealth He crafts an ephod, a type of apron or short coat worn by priests [ביאור שטיינזלץ], specifically designed to imitate the sacred garments used in the Tabernacle [מצודת ציון]. Alongside this, he creates teraphim, which are human-shaped figurines [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ] utilized as magical tools to predict the future and receive prophecies [רלב״ג, מצודת ציון].

To complete this independent religious site, a clergyman is required. The act of initiating someone into this role involves education and appointment to a position of authority, mirroring the formal dedication ceremonies of Aaron and his sons Having adult sons, Micah selects one of them, teaches him how to offer sacrifices, and appoints him as a personal priest to serve before the idol and seek fortunes The bold establishment of public idolatry and the appointment of a priest outside the lineage of Aaron highlights the deep influence of the mother's nature on her son; just as she created a god, he creates a priest. Ultimately, such open rebellion is only possible due to the complete absence of a central government or the fear of a king in Israel, reflecting a chaotic era where people simply did whatever seemed right in their own eyes [אברבנאל].
