שופטים, פרק י״ז, פסוק ט׳

A simple meeting on the road develops into a revealing conversation between a local man, Micah, and a passing traveler. Micah initiates the exchange by asking about the traveler's origins, naturally assuming that the man standing before him has a permanent home [מלבי״ם]. In his response, the traveler sheds light on his current situation. He explains that while he previously lived in Bethlehem of Judah, he is currently without a permanent residence [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The traveler goes on to identify himself as a Levite. This detail is not merely a piece of biographical information about his family background. Rather, it serves as a clear declaration of his skills and calling. By stating his tribal affiliation, he is announcing his readiness and qualification to teach and guide others, fulfilling the traditional duties of his tribe [מצודת דוד].

As for his destination, the Levite admits that he is wandering in search of a new place to settle, willing to live wherever he can find a home [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary motivation behind his travels is economic need. He is actively looking for a community where he can find work and secure a steady livelihood for himself [רש״י].
