שופטים, פרק י״ט, פסוק כ״ח

As dawn breaks, the man steps out of the house and finds his concubine. He tells her to get up so they can continue their journey [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His words reveal a complete failure to grasp the tragic reality of the scene before him. He speaks to her simply because, at that moment, he does not yet realize that she is actually dead [מצודת דוד].

His instruction is met with total silence, as there is no one to respond [מצודת ציון]. The harsh reason for this lack of an answer is that she is no longer alive [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Once the grim reality of the situation finally becomes clear to him, he lifts her lifeless body onto his donkey and makes the journey back to his home [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
