הֵ֘מָּה֮ מֵיטִיבִ֣ים אֶת־לִבָּם֒ וְהִנֵּה֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הָעִ֜יר אַנְשֵׁ֣י בְנֵי־בְלִיַּ֗עַל נָסַ֙בּוּ֙ אֶת־הַבַּ֔יִת מִֽתְדַּפְּקִ֖ים עַל־הַדָּ֑לֶת וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אֶל־הָ֠אִ֠ישׁ בַּ֣עַל הַבַּ֤יִת הַזָּקֵן֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הוֹצֵ֗א אֶת־הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א אֶל־בֵּיתְךָ֖ וְנֵדָעֶֽנּוּ׃

A scene of warm, peaceful hospitality is suddenly shattered by a dark threat rising from the city streets, putting basic moral laws to a cruel test. Inside the home, the host and his guest are enjoying a pleasant evening, eating, drinking, and sharing friendly conversation [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

Outside, a mob of wicked, lawless men gathers. These individuals, corrupt from birth and having cast off the yoke of God, are described as worthless scoundrels [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל]. This terrifying event bears a striking resemblance to the infamous sin of Sodom, but there is a fundamental difference. In Sodom, the cruelty toward guests was driven by twisted city laws that formally banned hospitality. In this case, the crime is born entirely out of personal, primal lust. Because it is driven by individual desire rather than civic law, not all the townspeople participate in the siege; the threat comes solely from a specific wicked mob [מלבי״ם].

The men surround the house to ensure the guest has no path of escape [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. Yet, unlike the people of Sodom who violently tried to break down the door, this mob knocks gently [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. This calm knocking reveals their calculated approach, showing they do not intend to fight or harm the homeowner [מלבי״ם]. Out of a twisted sense of respect for the elderly host, who is an honored member of the community, they approach him directly. They demand that he bring the guest outside himself, preferring the surrender to happen willingly rather than by force [אלשיך, אברבנאל].

The mob's explicit demand is understood by most commentators as a threat of homosexual assault [רש״י, מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ], though another perspective suggests they simply intend to murder the guest and are using polite language to describe a horrific act [רד״ק]. However, a deeper psychological reading of the event reveals a much darker manipulation. The mob's true, hidden intention is neither to assault the male guest nor to harm the host's daughter, whom they respect as a fellow local resident. Their real target is the guest's beautiful concubine. By demanding the man, they are applying severe psychological pressure, calculating that the terrified guest will ultimately hand over the woman to save his own life—which is exactly how the tragedy eventually unfolds [אברבנאל].
