וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו עֹבְרִ֨ים אֲנַ֜חְנוּ מִבֵּֽית־לֶ֣חֶם יְהוּדָה֮ עַד־יַרְכְּתֵ֣י הַר־אֶפְרַ֒יִם֒ מִשָּׁ֣ם אָנֹ֔כִי וָאֵלֵ֕ךְ עַד־בֵּ֥ית לֶ֖חֶם יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־בֵּ֤ית יְהֹוָה֙ אֲנִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ וְאֵ֣ין אִ֔ישׁ מְאַסֵּ֥ף אוֹתִ֖י הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

A traveler stranded in a city square must often quickly establish his credibility to strangers. Standing before an old man he just met, a Levite traveler details his journey, his identity, and his noble intentions. He highlights the painful contrast between his respectable standing and the complete lack of hospitality he is enduring.

He explains that his journey began in Bethlehem of Judah and is aimed toward the deep regions of the hill country of Ephraim, where his home is located. Because the distance is so vast, the trip naturally requires more than a single day of travel [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. He is careful to clarify that his visit to Bethlehem was a specific, singular trip and that he is now simply returning home. This detail is meant to assure the old man that he is not a wandering peddler moving from town to town looking for business [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, the Levite declares that his ultimate destination is the House of God. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the Tabernacle in Shiloh, situated within the territory of Ephraim. There are a few ways to understand why he mentions this specific location. It is possible that Shiloh was his actual hometown, or that his status as a Levite tied him directly to the daily service of the Tabernacle located there [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, even if he did not live in Shiloh, he might have been making a special journey there to pray and offer sacrifices [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

Sharing this religious destination serves a highly practical purpose. By presenting himself as someone actively engaged in fulfilling a Commandment, the Levite hopes to separate himself from the idol worshippers associated with Micah, who also resided in the Ephraim region. He trusts that proving his piety will stir the old man's compassion and encourage him to offer a warm welcome [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the traveler expresses his deep frustration. He is a decent man on a religious journey, yet not a single local resident is willing to open their doors to him, leaving him abandoned to sit outside in the public street [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
