A master and his servant face a pressing need to find shelter as daylight fades. The master urgently presses his attendant to increase their pace so they can quickly approach a settled area and secure a place to sleep before the sun completely sets [מצודת דוד].
They set their sights on two potential destinations for the night: Gibeah or Ramah. Both of these cities are located north of Jerusalem, within the territory of the tribe of Benjamin [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The master suggests both locations as options because he is unsure which town is closer to their current position on the road. The practical plan is simply to press forward and spend the night in whichever city they manage to reach before nightfall [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
