The journey of the man, his concubine, and his servant reaches a critical point as daylight fades, forcing them to seek shelter for the night. The sun sets just as the group finds themselves near Gibeah, a city belonging to the tribe of Benjamin [מצודת ציון, שטיינזלץ]. Halting their travel, they enter the city to find a place to sleep.
Because of their late arrival in the evening, they sit in the city street, expecting someone to offer them hospitality. Yet, even though they wait in a central location where all the townspeople pass by, not a single local resident offers to take them into their home [אברבנאל].
