In moments of absolute crisis, when a person hits rock bottom, a simple cry to God becomes the only way forward. This call does not require complex wording or long, structured prayers. Instead, a direct and powerful plea from a distressed heart is enough. Simply calling out God's name acts as a complete prayer [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. It is a practice meant for any time and any situation, even from the absolute depths of despair [צאינה וראינה]. In such extreme circumstances, merely mentioning God's name from within the trouble ensures that the cry is heard immediately [לחם דמעה]. This cry from the depths reflects the historical experiences of figures like Joseph, Jeremiah, and Daniel, who were all saved from literal pits [תורה תמימה].

Reaching the lowest depths represents an unprecedented state of distress, symbolizing a multitude of severe troubles that are overwhelming in both number and intensity [אבן עזרא]. Yet, this extreme state carries a hidden message of hope. It represents the absolute lowest possible point of descent. When a person reaches this ultimate bottom, there is nowhere left to fall. Because there is no further way down, the very next step must inevitably be a rise and a recovery [אלון בכות, לחם דמעה].

Beyond physical and emotional distress, the pit also symbolizes a profound spiritual low. This mirrors the cry of the Israelites during their exile in Egypt, when they were deeply entrenched in impurity and nearing the absolute lowest spiritual levels. Even from the thick mud of sin and wrongful thoughts, when a person calls out to God, He hears their voice [פלגי מים, לחם דמעה].

Finally, crying out from the depths represents a unique way of dealing with harsh realities. Routine prayer is often offered before a crisis strikes in order to prevent it. In contrast, calling out from the lowest pit means praying from within a tragedy that has already unfolded.
