Lamentations 3:56Sefaria

קוֹלִ֖י שָׁמָ֑עְתָּ אַל־תַּעְלֵ֧ם אׇזְנְךָ֛ לְרַוְחָתִ֖י לְשַׁוְעָתִֽי׃ {ס}

A deep longing for an unbroken relationship with God often relies on the memory of His past kindness. Remembering that God has listened before provides the foundation for asking Him to remain attentive now and in the future. The primary approach among commentators notes that acknowledging God's past attention naturally leads to a desperate plea for Him not to close Himself off from current prayers. Simply knowing that God is listening is already experienced as a small measure of redemption [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, this plea also carries a profound underlying fear. There are times when God might bring salvation before the people even call out, simply because He wishes to avoid their prayers entirely. Therefore, the request is not just for physical rescue, but a sincere plea that God will truly listen and not turn away in disgust [אלון בכות].

The ultimate goal of this cry for attention can be understood in a few different ways. The primary approach among commentators suggests it is a straightforward request for God to notice their anguish so they might finally find relief and comfort [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it can be seen as a desire for an ongoing relationship. Even after God grants salvation and brings relief, the hope is that He will continue to listen to their prayers, rather than merely providing help and moving on [אלון בכות]. A more vivid interpretation focuses on the idea of creating spiritual space. Sins build a heavy wall that separates the people from their Father in Heaven. The plea is for God to carve out an opening through these barriers, much like He did to accept the repentance of King Manasseh. By creating this spiritual clearing, the prayers can slip through the divide and be welcomed before His throne [פלגי מים].
