Out of the depths of exile and brokenness, a desperate cry reaches out, seeking heavenly mercy for both physical agony and a degraded spiritual state. The plea asks God to remember the suffering rather than merely look upon it, because invoking His memory specifically awakens divine compassion [תורה תמימה]. It is a request for God to hold this pain in a constant, continuous awareness [לחם דמעה].

The suffering is defined by intense poverty and hardship. Most commentators understand this as severe physical pressure and bitter pain [שטיינזלץ, פלגי מים, צאינה וראינה, אלשיך]. Yet, it also reflects a spiritual poverty, representing a failure to fulfill positive commandments, and historically echoes the bitter exile in Egypt [לחם דמעה]. Accompanying this poverty is a deep sense of misery. Some interpret this misery as the physical act of crying and wailing over the pain [רש״י, צאינה וראינה]. The primary approach among commentators, however, views it as rebellion, referring to the sins committed against God by violating His prohibitions [תורה תמימה, פלגי מים, לחם דמעה], which historically points to the Babylonian exile [לחם דמעה]. These two ideas—poverty and rebellion—are deeply connected. Originally, the hardships of poverty were intended to cleanse a person of sin. In reality, however, crushing poverty drives a person to despair, causing them to lose their senses and rebel even further [אלון בכות].

This overwhelming situation is defined by immense bitterness, compared to consuming bitter food and a bitter drink [פלגי מים]. The constant anxiety of poverty is likened to the harsh taste of wormwood, while the added suffering and sins are compared to the deadly venom of a snake [אלשיך, אלון בכות]. This bitterness stems not only from physical torment but also from a profound regret and sorrow over past sins [פלגי מים]. Typically, the memory of past hardships softens as time passes. However, these specific troubles were so severe and entirely devoid of hope that simply recalling them in the present is just as bitter and agonizing as living through them all over again [לחם דמעה].
