איכה, פרק ג׳, פסוק כ״א

Lamentations 3:21Sefaria

זֹ֛את אָשִׁ֥יב אֶל־לִבִּ֖י עַל־כֵּ֥ן אוֹחִֽיל׃ {ס}

Out of the depths of sorrow and pain that nearly lead to complete despair, a sudden shift in mindset takes place. After feeling that all hope from God has vanished, a conscious decision is made to draw thoughts of faith back into the heart. Through this deliberate act of remembering, hope is awakened once again [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ, צאינה וראינה].

Commentators offer different perspectives on exactly what thought is brought to mind to spark this renewal. One approach suggests looking forward to God's unending kindnesses, using the promise of His mercy as a way to find personal comfort [רש״י, פלגי מים, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective focuses not on a specific promise, but on the pure essence of hope and expectation itself [אבן עזרא].

Beyond these ideas, others point to broader spiritual anchors that sustain the people during exile. A central line of thought identifies this anchor as the Torah. Without the comfort and joy it provides in times of banishment, the Israelites would have perished among the nations [תורה תמימה, אלון בכות]. Additionally, some traditions suggest a focus on the Divine Presence that actively accompanies the people in their exile, granting them the firm security that God will eventually redeem them for His name's sake [נחל אשכול].

Finally, this deliberate return to faith is connected to the ultimate day of redemption. Although God keeps the exact time of salvation hidden within His own heart, the very knowledge that this future rescue is securely guarded by Him is enough to inspire a person. It awakens a drive to wait and yearn for salvation every single day anew [אלון בכות].
