דְּרָכַ֥י סוֹרֵ֛ר וַֽיְפַשְּׁחֵ֖נִי שָׂמַ֥נִי שֹׁמֵֽם׃ {ס}

A traveler walks along a road, only to find the journey violently disrupted and blocked, leaving him entirely helpless and alone. This journey captures a deep struggle, blending physical obstacles, bodily harm, and a profound spiritual crisis.

The primary approach among commentators is that an enemy has scattered thorns and sharp hazards across the road to delay the traveler. Alternatively, this disruption is understood as the path itself being twisted, or as a forced, rebellious straying from the proper route [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a spiritual level, these scattered thorns represent the enemy's efforts to lay an ambush, causing a person to stumble in their commitment to the Torah and its Commandments [פלגי מים].

Facing these hazards, the traveler suffers deeply. One perspective focuses on the physical act of navigating such a treacherous route. To avoid the sharp thorns, the traveler is forced to spread his legs and take unnaturally wide, awkward steps to leap over the obstacles [רש״י, צאינה וראינה, אלון בכות]. Another viewpoint sees this as a much more violent injury, describing a brutal tearing and splitting, much like a tree being cracked wide open [תורה תמימה, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This forced, unnatural movement holds deep symbolic meaning. It represents being pushed entirely off the path of the Torah by the enemy's relentless attacks [פלגי מים]. Furthermore, the awkward spreading of the legs serves as an allegory for complete instability. Just as the world stands on the pillars of justice, truth, and peace, a person's two legs represent justice and truth, with peace serving as the unifying force between them. When the legs are forced apart, justice and truth are separated, peace vanishes, and all stability collapses [אלון בכות].

At the end of this destructive process, the traveler is left completely isolated, ruined, and abandoned in the midst of the disaster [ביאור שטיינזלץ, פלגי מים]. There is also a hidden timeline to this suffering. While the blocking of the path with thorns occurs openly in the present, the enemy's brutal acts of tearing and destruction actually took place earlier, hidden in secret [לחם דמעה].
