Lamentations 3:12Sefaria

דָּרַ֤ךְ קַשְׁתּוֹ֙ וַיַּצִּיבֵ֔נִי כַּמַּטָּרָ֖א לַחֵֽץ׃ {ס}

In moments of severe disaster, it can feel as though God has drawn His bow and placed the sufferer directly in the line of fire. The primary approach among commentators is that the victim is positioned squarely as a target for divine arrows, ensuring no shot misses its mark [אבן עזרא].

While this paints a picture of a direct and merciless strike, a deeper and surprising perspective emerges from the concept of being set up as a target. Rather than merely positioning the people to be destroyed, God actually granted the Israelites the strength and courage to endure immense suffering without collapsing. Ordinarily, a person struck by a lethal arrow dies immediately, bringing an abrupt end to their pain. However, God endowed Israel with a unique resilience. They are likened to a wooden beam or a training shield used for archery practice. Even as they are continuously shot at and absorb devastating blows, they remain standing and are never completely destroyed [תורה תמימה, אלון בכות].

This powerful metaphor introduces two distinct features to their suffering. First, it changes the usual dynamic of war. In a typical battle, arrows are fired at the backs of fleeing enemies. Here, the Israelites stand face to face with the incoming arrows, confronting the strike directly like a fixed target. Second, the arrows fired at them do not pass through. They absorb the full impact of the weapons into their own bodies, which ultimately protects those standing behind them from being harmed [אלון בכות, פלגי מים].
