Lamentations 3:23Sefaria

חֲדָשִׁים֙ לַבְּקָרִ֔ים רַבָּ֖ה אֱמוּנָתֶֽךָ׃ {ס}

The experience of a new dawn carries a profound reminder that God's kindnesses never cease. Rather than fading over time, His mercies are constantly renewed, awakening a deep sense of faith within the human heart. The primary approach among commentators is that this divine grace refreshes day by day and morning by morning [רש״י, פלגי מים, צאינה וראינה], revealing an abundance of compassion that is truly great and boundless [אבן עזרא].

On a personal level, this daily renewal is most deeply felt when God returns a person's soul after a night of sleep. Unlike a human creditor who might withhold a deposited item to collect on a debt, God faithfully returns the soul each morning despite a person's sins. This daily act of trust serves as proof of His faithfulness, offering comfort that He will certainly fulfill the promises delivered through His prophets [אלון בכות]. Furthermore, the very act of waking up instills us with the confidence that just as God raises us from our sleep, His faithfulness is great enough to one day resurrect the dead [תורה תמימה].

This theme of renewal extends to the entire fabric of creation. Every morning, new groups of angels are formed from a river of fire. They sing their praises to God and immediately perish, while human beings are kept alive and sustained. This striking contrast illustrates how God's kindness and mercy toward humanity are enduring and without end [תורה תמימה].

The greatness of this faith flows in two complementary directions. First, it points to the absolute reliability of God. His promises are vast, and recognizing that He will protect and fulfill everything He has assured us is a monumental aspect of belief [רש״י]. Second, it reflects the faith within the person. The daily miracles and kindnesses we experience strengthen and expand the faith in our own hearts [ביאור שטיינזלץ, פלגי מים]. This inner conviction provides the necessary strength to endure life's hardships, ensuring that a person does not retreat even when faced with severe suffering [פלגי מים].

Beyond the daily human experience, this constant renewal carries a national message of exile and redemption. Morning symbolizes the breaking light that follows the dark periods experienced by the people of Israel. Just as God brings light after darkness, we can trust in His immense faithfulness to redeem us from exile [תורה תמימה]. Since the current exile has no predetermined end, the dawn of each new day serves as a call for the nation to renew itself through daily repentance, which will ultimately bring about redemption [אלון בכות]. On an additional level, this ongoing renewal is mirrored in the study of Torah. The fresh insights constantly discovered by scholars are viewed as a positive sign, testifying to God's enduring desire to save His people [נחל אשכול].
