Lamentations 3:34Sefaria

לְדַכֵּא֙ תַּ֣חַת רַגְלָ֔יו כֹּ֖ל אֲסִ֥ירֵי אָֽרֶץ׃ {ס}

God does not inherently desire to inflict pain or crush humanity underfoot. The very idea of unprovoked oppression or the perversion of justice is completely foreign to His nature [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Instead, the hardships and crushing difficulties people experience are the natural consequences brought about by their own wrongful actions [צאינה וראינה].

Viewed through a historical lens, this period of immense suffering points directly to Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. It defies logic to think that this king could conquer the entire world and subjugate all its inhabitants purely through his own strength. Such an unnatural and absolute conquest was only possible because it was directly orchestrated by God [פלגי מים]. Yet, even within this overwhelming destruction, a profound divine kindness was at work. Nebuchadnezzar served merely as an instrument to cleanse the Israelites of their wrongdoings. By directing the king's fury against the physical wood and stones of the Temple and Jerusalem, God exhausted the destructive force on buildings, ultimately sparing the people themselves from complete annihilation [תורה תמימה].

This balance of justice and mercy extends further into the spiritual realm, revealing a deliberate softening of divine judgment. If disaster were delivered directly by God, its infinite force would be entirely unbearable for any human being. To mitigate this harshness, God channels the consequences through the natural order and celestial systems, which act as a symbolic buffer. This profound consideration is rooted in the very nature of human existence. People are essentially captives in a physical reality, with their pure souls imprisoned within heavy, material bodies. Recognizing this fragile and confined state naturally arouses divine mercy, justifying a softer and more measured approach to human punishment [אלון בכות].
