This posture of absolute surrender is also expressed through complete silence and self-nullification, where a person is left entirely unable to speak [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it represents a profound act of mourning in which a person places ashes directly into their mouth [צאינה וראינה].

This vivid image of degradation and the complete loss of national dignity has evoked deep sorrow throughout history. Rabbi Judah the Prince would weep when reflecting on this concept, as it illustrates how the loss of national honor crushes the spirit of a people to a point where healing seems nearly impossible. The tragedy is only magnified by the lingering uncertainty. Even after enduring such severe agony and humiliation, the future remains clouded, and salvation is left as nothing more than a fragile possibility [תורה תמימה].

On a deeper spiritual level, this posture of submission is actually a plea for the spiritual repair necessary for redemption. The imagery of dust connects back to the curse of the serpent, which symbolizes the evil inclination. From this perspective, the mourner is actively seeking a way to rid the world of this destructive urge. The act of directing dust to the mouth represents the total defeat of the evil inclination itself. This echoes the way Abraham conquered his own desires by viewing himself as merely dust and ashes. Ultimately, nullifying this inner evil is the true key to bringing the redeemer, and it is within this spiritual victory that the hope for better days truly lies [אלון בכות].
